Toaster Oven

Had lunch today with a frined at Toaster Oven. Vintage toasters are mounted on the brick walls and, yes, the sandwiches are toasted. Reminds me of the time I was at Muffin Treat near Vacaville. My friend asked the waitress if he could get toast instead of a muffin to which she replied, "If you wanted toast you should have gone to Toast Treat." The attached bar of the aforesaid restaurant was called the Moon Room Lounge. Tell us your horror/delight stories about restaurants betw S.F. and Sacramento or anywhere "On the Road."

When I visited the Cadillac Ranch last summer, I stopped at Fry Babies in Amarillo. They have individual mini fryers at your table. I had the fried clams and beer-battered Oreos with extra gravy.

The best omlettes on the planet are in a little diner called Moe's in Stockton, CA. I made my then-beau drive sixty miles out of our way so I could eat there.
Who knew that eggs, anaheim peppers and American (of all things) cheese could be so heavenly-in Stockton, of all places?

This is the _only_ mention of the Moon Room I can find on the Internet -- so I'm annotating it even though this blog entry is long out of date.

The Moon Room was a piece of work -- space themed, with circular sconce lamps mounted on the wall that looked like cratered moons. And behind the bar a 20-foot mural of the Apollo-Soyuz joint mission back in the early '70s -- a full painting of the two modules docked together in orbit, complete with glowing earth, blazing suns, spacewalking 'nauts, and on, and on. It was quite a piece of work.

Why? All I can figure out was that Fairfield, where the Muffin Treat was, was and is a huge Air Force town, even if Travis, the local base is all about air transport, not combat.

But the Moon Room was quite a thing to find in a nondescript roadside restaurant behind a Shell station.
